There’s nothing like the antics of a young lamb to capture your attention and keep you entertained. Guarded by attentive alpacas, Burrawang’s lambs enjoy “Royal” treatment. Our lambs are a little different than most found in Australia, they’re Dorpers.

Burrawang is a registered stud for these amazing animals. Recently introduced to Australia, this breed offers several advantages over other breeds for fat lamb production. To our guests, the most obvious difference is that Dorpers naturally shed their own wool. To a fat lamb producer, this means less maintenance because the shedding makes these sheep less susceptible to fly strike and eliminates the need for crutching and mulesing.

Unlike many sheep properties, we have lambs virtually all year round. That’s because Dorpers are exceptionally hardy and can produce fat lambs even in harsh conditions. In addition, Dorpers are non seasonal breeders so they produce lambs up to three times every 24 months rather than once a year as with European breeds.

Our lambs don’t stay small very long. At weaning time (13 weeks), our fat lambs weigh in at around 45kgs, making them great meat producers.

The Dorper breed of sheep originated in South Africa in the 1930's. Bred to cope with the harsh realities of drought on the African continent, this breed is now the dominant fat lamb producing sheep breed in South Africa.

With so many advantages, Dorpers have a great potential to significantly improve Australia’s fat lamb industry. Our White Dorper stud operation uses state of the art embryo transfer programs to maximize this potential, while maintaining sound and sustainable agricultural practices to ensure the integrity of our flock.

Among our 3000 sheep, we have over 400 stud quality pure bred white dorper ewes of breeding age.Twice per year we conduct embryo transfer programs, we select our best performing ewes as donors and use our 2nd cross ewes as recipient to replicate quickly our best performing animals. Our historic woolshed now includes a specially designed surgery to provide an air conditioned, dust free environment for transfers. We have surplus purebred ewes and sell about 300 flock and stud rams per year.
